Encourage your kids to go to www.freerice.com (You can try it too – but beware, it is addicting!)
It was created by a father to help his son improve his vocabulary in preparation for PSAT/SAT's. The gimmick is that for every word you answer with the correct definition the site sponsors donate 20 grains of rice to the UN World Food Bank.
Approximately 20,000 grains of rice provide enough caloric intake to sustain an adult for one day. Using this calculation, enough rice is donated to feed about 7,000 people daily.
FreeRice is a creative web-based vocabulary game that ties every correct answer to the donation of rice to WFP. The great thing is that the more you play FreeRice and the more you learn the more rice we are able to purchase to feed hungry people around the world.
Please help spread the word about this innovative idea. It's entertaining, educational and provides life-saving food for the world's hungry -- all at the same time!
THANK YOU for donating rice to the U.N. World Food Programme through FreeRice.
FreeRice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com.
FreeRice has two goals:
· Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
· Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.
Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your vocabulary can improve your life. It is a great investment in yourself.
Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide. Thank you.
